Twenty years ago, Stefan Sobkowiak bought a commercial apple orchard with the intention of converting it to an organic orchard. He did just that, but eventually understood the limitations of the organic model originating from monoculture. He then decided to tear out most of the trees and replant in a way that would maximize biodiversity and yield while minimizing the amount of maintenance required. Inspired by permaculture principles, the orchard now counts over 100 cultivars of apples, plus several types of plums, pears, cherries, and countless other fruits and vegetables.

ABOUT

As we are approaching the end of cheap oil, and as climate change is becoming an increasingly alarming concern, more and more people worldwide are realizing that profound changes are coming for human civilization. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, or if you need some convincing, I urge you to have a look at some of the films and books on the Resources page of this website.

To adapt to these new realities, it will be inevitable to re-localize our economies and our food production, re-connect our communities, and re-develop real skills that have been replaced, over the past decades, by an abundance of cheap fossil fuel energy.

Faced with such challenges, many of us feel powerless. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, to feel like our individual actions have little impact on such global problems. But the truth is that people in all corners of the world are already busy putting together concrete projects, making real changes in their personal lives, and in their communities. More and more people are starting to grow their own food, to build local networks, to create local resilience and to get involved in projects such as the Transition Towns movement.

Real change in people will often happen through desperation, or inspiration. This project is about harnessing the latter. We can either keep the blinders on, pretend that economic growth is the way out of this mess, that technology will somehow allow us to maintain our current consumption levels, or we can play an active role in what will be the greatest challenge – and the greatest opportunity – mankind has ever faced.
“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
― Richard Buckminster Fuller
The “Possible” documentary project is about telling the stories of individuals and communities who are actively engaged in creating a better, more sustainable future. It’s about showing that normal people are doing real things, things that are within the reach of all of us. The aim of this project is to debunk all of the false barriers people create for themselves when they start thinking about transitioning to a more sustainable way of life. I don’t have the money… not enough space… not enough time… I don’t know how… it will never work… I’m alone.
By showing real life examples, people of all ages, of different economic backgrounds, in rural or urban settings, living in all kinds of climates or settings, it will become obvious that no matter who you are, no matter where you live, you can do something.

How about a full-length feature film?

The current focus of this project is to share as many solutions and initiatives with as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. We release short videos on an ongoing basis as fast as they can be produced. All the content on this website is free, and sharing the videos is strongly encouraged.

Producing a full-length documentary from some of the content is a still part of the plan, but there is no plan for a specific release date at the moment. Sign up for our newsletter or follow our Facebook page to receive the latest updates.

Who’s involved?

My name is Olivier Asselin and I’m a freelance photographer and film-maker. Before embarking on this project, I lived in Africa for almost eight years, working mainly for humanitarian and development organizations. I’m now back in Canada and loosely based in Montreal, Quebec. You can check out my photography work here : www.olivierasselin.com

I started learning about permaculture in July 2012, and at the same time discovered an impressive network of people worldwide who are already having real positive impact. For the first time in many years, I was starting to see real solutions, real alternatives. I don’t believe there’s a miracle cure to the imminent crises the world is facing, but there are things each of us can do to start adapting to tomorrow’s realities.

Ben Falk is a permaculture designer based in Moretown, Vermont. In this video, he speaks about different aspects of homesteading and cold weather, notably his wood cook-stove which also heats water, and his compost-powered greenhouse heating system. He also talks about the importance of being engaged with the land around us, and how gardening is just basically awesome!

This video is part of the Possible.org project. Please visit our website for more videos and updates, and follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/possiblefilm) or Twitter (twitter.com/possiblefilm).
